Textile exports decline more than 20 percent during May 2021

Value of textile exports recorded at USD1.06 billion

Islamabad June 19 2021: Textile exports during the month of May 2021 dropped significantly by 20.5 percent to USD1,060 million when compared to exports of April, as per data released by Pakistan Bureau of Statistics.

Extended Eid holidays to curb the spread of COVID-19 could be the reason behind lower exports.

This takes textile exports to USD13,748 million since July 2021 up by 18.9 percent when compared to USD11,567 million during the same period last year.  No quantity of raw cotton has been exported during the month.

Country has exported 499 tons of cotton since July 2020 despite more than 30 percent drop in cotton production

Cotton yarn exports declined by 29.8 percent during the month to USD72 million against exports of USD103 million during April 2021. The quantum of cotton yarn exports dropped by 31.3 percent to 23,560 tons when compared to the previous month. Cotton cloth exports dropped by 17.1 percent on Month on Month basis to USD134 million compared to exports of USD162 million in April 2021.

Knitwear exports declined by 13.9 percent in May 2021 to recorded at USD293 million compared to USD340 million in the previous month. However, number of pieces declined by 5.5 percent on month on month basis. Bed wear exports dropped by 24.4 percent during the month of May to USD181 million compared to USD239 million Bed wear exports last month.

Towel exports declined by 26.7 percent during the month of May to USD61.2 million

Exports of Readymade Garments recorded at USD194 million dropped by 20 percent when compared to exports of USD243 million during the month of April. However, Readymade Garment exports were 43.7 percent higher when compared to May 2020.
