October 05, 2022: Ahead of the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, we have gone back through the rich archives and found the top 16 moments from previous events.

The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Greatest Moments

Carlos Brathwaite’s ‘Remember the Name’ moment vs Steve Smith’s trickery (2016)

Carlos Brathwaite’s ‘Remember the Name’

Carlos Brathwaite smashed England all-rounder Ben Stokes for four consecutive sixes to help the West Indies lift the T20 World Cup in 2016 at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. The moment became etched in the memory of one and all, with Ian Bishop uttering the famous words, “Carlos Brathwaite, Remember the Name!” from the commentary box.

Steve Smith’s trickery

After being pushed into a corner with a well-set field, Steve Smith shuffled well outside the off-stump to whip Pakistan’s Wahab Riaz for a boundary in 2016. The shot by Steve Smith was innovation at its finest, leaving the Pakistan left-arm quick befuddled and bemused.

India lift inaugural title (2007) vs Rangana Herath’s web of spin (2014)

Joy for India as they lift the title

Joginder Sharma emerged as the hero as India pacer claimed the vital wicket of Misbah-ul-Haq to help his side defeat Pakistan in the inaugural event in 2007. The catch by S Sreesanth sparked wild celebrations as India were crowned the champions for the first and only time in their history!

Rangana Herath’s web of spin

The Sri Lankan southpaw produced one of the finest bowling performances ever witnessed in the history of T20 cricket. He sent New Zealand in a spin, taking 5/3 to turn their 2014 T20 World Cup meeting on its head and clinching a vital victory for his side.

Yuvraj Singh goes ballistic (2007) vs The Dutch in dreamland (2009)

Yuvraj Singh creates history

The India star produced a moment of magic to smash England pacer Stuart Broad for six sixes in an over. An unforgettable moment in the history of the game, Yuvraj’s feat helped India beat England, on their road to T20 World Cup glory.

Dutch in dreamland

Ryan ten Doeschate and Edge Schiferli scampered through for an overthrow as the Netherlands shocked England in the 2009 tournament opener. It was one of the biggest upsets in the history of the tournament, as Netherlands chased a target of 163 at Lord’s to leave England shellshocked.

Boom Boom goes bang (2009) vs Pushing the boundaries (2009)

Boom Boom goes bang

Pakistan star Shahid Afridi produced the good on the big stage as the all-rounder hit an unbeaten half-century to guide his side to glory over Sri Lanka in 2009. The performance came in the final at Lord’s, helping Pakistan clinch their maiden and only T20 World Cup title.

Pushing the boundaries

A quick-witted piece of thinking and fielding from Angelo Mathews prevented a six off Ajantha Mendis’ bowling against the West Indies at the 2009 tournament. Running backwards at long-on after Ramnaresh Sarwan connected with a drive, Mathews flung the ball into the air as he realised momentum was going to carry him over the ropes.

However, his bat-back failed to push the ball into the field of play. Realising this, Mathews ran out of the field of play and jumped to slap the ball back in with both feet off the ground. After a discussion between the two umpires, it was deemed to not be a boundary, a decision backed up by the MCC days later.

Matthew Wade dines out on Shaheen Afridi (2021) vs The drama of a Bowl-Out (2007)

The Australia veteran kept his cool when it mattered most as he hit three consecutive sixes off the ace pacer to help his side beat Pakistan in the semi-final in Dubai. Australia would eventually beat New Zealand in the final to be crowned the champions for the first time in their history.

The drama of a Bowl-Out

After a tie between India and Pakistan, Robin Uthappa achieved what will likely be an exclusive feat, hitting the stumps in the Bowl-Out to deliver a heart-stopping win. Virender Sehwag and Harbhajan Singh were the other two players to hit the target for India, as Pakistan missed all their attempts.

Thisara Perera on song against India (2014) vs Super Shaheen Afridi (2021)

The Sri Lanka all-rounder produced a match-winning cameo in the 2014 final to help his side to a memorable triumph. He hit 23* off 14, including 3 sixes to help Sri Lanka win their maiden title.

Super Shaheen Afridi

Pakistan’s Shaheen Afridi stunned India, trapping Rohit Sharma lbw to start a procession of wickets in their 2021 T20 World Cup meeting. He would also claim the scalps of KL Rahul and Virat Kohli, as Pakistan registered a famous 10-wicket victory over their arch-rivals in Dubai.

MS Dhoni magic keeps India’s dream alive (2016) vs Master of the chase (2016)

MS Dhoni magic keeps India’s dream alive

The legendary India wicket-keeper magnificently ran out Mustafizur Rahman on the final ball of the match to help his side clinch a narrow one-run triumph over Bangladesh in 2016 in Bengaluru.

Master of the chase

Virat Kohli showed cool and confidence, dancing down the track and hitting James Faulkner over his head for six to put a dagger in Australian hearts in 2016. Kohli scored 82* off only 51, showing his wizardry in chasing down a score.

Michael Hussey saves Australia’s blushes (2010) vs At long last for England (2010)

Michael Hussey saves Australia’s blushes

The star left-hander did what many of his teammates failed to do and kept his cool to hit an unbeaten 60 – and 23 from the final over in the semi-final. This ended Pakistan’s dream run at the 2010 event and helped Australia reach the finals.

At long last for England

Paul Collingwood charged down the track to hit the winning runs, sealing England’s first men’s ICC tournament trophy over foes Australia in 2010 in West Indies.
