Islamabad May 3 2025: Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation in Pakistan fell to just 0.3 percent year-on-year (YoY) in April 2025, marking the lowest level ever recorded, according to official data. This compares to 0.7 percent in March 2025 and a significantly higher 17.3 percent in April 2024.
The drop in inflation was primarily driven by a 3.59 percent year-on-year decline in food prices. Substantial decreases were also recorded in electricity charges (down 26.57 percent) and motor fuel prices (down 10.56 percent). Additionally, prices for communication apparatus fell by 1.25 percent, while household items such as washing soap, detergents, and matchboxes saw a modest decline of 0.41 percent.
On a month-on-month (MoM) basis, CPI inflation declined by 0.8 percent in April 2025, contrasting with a 0.9 percent increase in March and a 0.4 percent decrease in April 2024.
Inflation in Urban areas dropped to 0.5 percent YoY in April 2025, down from 1.2 percent in March and 19.4 percent a year ago. On MoM basis, it fell by 0.7 percent versus a 0.8 percent increase in March and a 0.1 percent decline in April 2024.
Rural CPI registered a 0.1 percent YoY decline in April 2025, following no change in March and a 14.5 percent rise in April 2024. MoM inflation dropped by 1.0 percent, compared to a 1.1 percent increase the previous month and a 0.9 percent decrease in the same period last year.
The Sensitive Price Index (SPI) also showed a notable YoY decline of 3.2 percent in April 2025, down from a 2.3 percent drop in March and 21.6 percent in April 2024. On a MoM basis, SPI inflation fell by 1.7 percent, compared to a 0.1 percent decrease in March and 0.7 percent in April last year.
