The Islamic Republic of Pakistan and the Republic of Kiribati formally agreed to establish the diplomatic relations, says a press release received here today from New York.
Ambassador Munir Akram, Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the United Nations, and Ambassador Teburoro Tito, Permanent Representative of Kiribati to the United Nations signed a Joint Communiqué to this effect, in New York this afternoon. On the occasion, the two Heads of Missions shared their confidence that the diplomatic ties will help bring the two countries and peoples closer on the bilateral front, while continuing to work closely at multilateral forums.
Both Ambassadors expressed their desire to advance bilateral cooperation by promoting political, trade and economic ties, interparliamentary linkages, and enhancing cultural and educational relations.
They also expressed views on the steps to further deepen and widen the scope of mutual cooperation in the future especially in the field of tourism and fisheries. They also jointly informed His Excellency António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, about the establishment of Pakistan-Kiribati diplomatic relations today. The Republic of Kiribati is a group of 33 Pacific Islands and home to almost 100,000 people. The country won independence from the United Kingdom in 1979. Both Pakistan and Kiribati are members of the British Commonwealth as well as the Asia Pacific Group.
